Date
[c. 1333]
Description
Petitioners
John de Denton.
Name(s)
de Denton, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[The petition is badly damaged and is missing a substantial part of its right-hand side. Much of the remainder is barely legible].Denton refers to the provision of a great ship by the king's command for the war [...] at the siege of Berwick, and it served at their cost for which they have received nothing. The petitioner requests an allowance or assignment for the great sum.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that it is right that they account in the Wardrobe for the costs, or that the king make another reward for their costs.
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1333 because it seems likely that the petitioner can be identified as the same individual who was mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne at around the time of Edward III's siege of Berwick in 1333.
