Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[The petition is damaged and is missing most of six lines from the top].The brothers request that the king have regard to the grant to them by the pope and the render that he made of certain lands and possessions, and command that all the lands and possessions that have come into his hand by the forfeiture of diverse lords be duly rendered to the hospital, and further of his grace that he will aid them that they are able to have the lands and the possessions that are in the hands of others according to the form of the petitioner's bull, and suffer that execution be made against those who detain them according to the form of the bull of Pope John who now is. The petitioners state that diverse lords came and ejected them from a great part of the lands and possessions against the ordinances of the pope and the will of the king, to the great damage of the hospital.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
People mentioned
John XXII, Pope.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1322 as it appears to refer to the grant of the lands of the Templars to the Hospitallers, made in England in 1313, and is clearly after the defeat of Thomas of Lancaster and the other baronial rebels in March 1322 by the reference to forfeited lands.
