- The petition is speculatively dated to c. 1290-c. 1310 partly based on the hand, and partly on the reference to John Comyn, earl of Buchan. The reference to the earl does not specify whether he, at the time, was alive or dead, and he was earl from 1290 until his death in 1308. The reference to service in Gascony may be a reference to service in the war of 1294-7.
