Date

Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the Bardi and Peruzzi.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[Petition in two or more parts. The petition is badly damaged so that the entire upper portion of the petition is illegible, and most of the right-hand side of the document is either missing or illegible].The merchants make complaints concerning 20,000 marks assigned them for their sustenance and in compensation for several assignments [? on the wool customs]. They request writs to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer concerning the account of the wool and of that sold overseas.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Northamptonshire
Norfolk
Gloucestershire
Berkshire
Hampshire
Derbyshire
Nottinghamshire.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1343 on the basis of the dating '17 Edw. 3' stamped on its guard. There are two warrants that notes on the dorse of the petition link to this petition. One of these, that from file 308, the note itself considers unlikely, and the other is also noted as problematic. In addition, both warrants are stamped with the date '19 Edw. 3' on the guard, and if these dates were stamped on at the same time as that stamped on the petition, then they clearly do not come from the same original file. They do seem to relate to the same matter as concerns the petitioner, but if the warrant does survive for the petition, it seems likely to be in a slightly earlier C 81 file for 17 Edw. III.
