Nature of request
Letter of Gunsalvo Maurus stating that Bolt and others in May last took at sea a ship called Santa Maria whose master was Frederick Betteson of Prussia, which ship was loaded with merchandise and other goods to a certain value, which merchandises and goods and the merchants of La Coruna and St James were of the power of the king of Castile. He requested a writ directed to Bertolet and the others pirates that they restore the goods or pay the estimate, or be compelled to appear before the king and his council, but they have not done so, so that he requests that they be condemned as rebels and contumacious and be made to render the merchandises and goods to the petitioner or the estimate with damages.

Note
The petition is dated to 1403-1404 as Robert Bolt of Dartmouth was ordered to deliver the merchandises and goods to Maurus on 6 September 1403, though this is perhaps the earlier order that the petition refers to as being ignored (CCR 1402-5, p. 108); and a commission was ordered into the same matter on the complaint of a merchant of La Coruna, which commission dates to 20 February 1404 (CPR 1401-5, p. 424).The petition would have to date to 1399-1406 anyway because the petition refers to the king of Castile being the king of England's brother, and for this to be the case it must be referring to Henry III of Castile, who was Henry IV of England's brother-in-law, Henry III reigning from 1379-1406, and Henry IV from 1399 to 1413.
