Description
Petitioners
Henry of Lancaster, earl of Lancaster.
Name(s)
Lancaster, earl of Lancaster, Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Lancaster state that he has sued many times concerning the manor of Chelveston and the matter is delayed because of a difficulty of law, and he requests that this petition together with an inquisition taken concerning the matter be sent before the justices of the pleas, and that they be commanded to do right, reason and final discussion to him. Lancaster shows that Syward held the manor of Chelveston from the Earl Ferrers of his manor of Higham Ferrers, and that the manor of Higham Ferrers came into Henry III's hand by forfeiture. Higham Ferrers was granted to Edmund, the king's son and descended to the petitioner after the death of his brother. Thomas, the petitioner's brother had purchased the manor of Chelveston and gave it to Holand, and after Holand's death the petitioner has sued to many parliaments by petition for the manor of Higham to which the services of Cheveston are awarded, and at another time an inquisition was ordered and returned.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition and all the other petitions that are in Chancery and all the process made upon them be sent before the justices assigned to hear the king's pleas. And let it be commanded to them that they view the petitions and process and hear the complaints of the earl, and call before them the king's sergeants, and hear the reasons on the one part and the other, and do right.
