Name(s)
Spynel; Nygre, Neapolyn; Celestre
Addressees
[Council of the] King of England and France.
Occupation
merchant of Genoa
Nature of request
[The petition is badly faded and substantial parts are illegible. However the petition seem to be a duplicate of SC 8/215/10745 with the exception that with this other petition the quantity of wine carried by the ship has very clearly been altered, and the name of Luke Etalian inserted in an interlineation. The details below have been completed from the fully legible near duplicate].Spynel and Nygre request that [whereas was charged the ship called 'Pelegryn' of Goes] of which Pieresson was master at La Rochelle with wine and iron of diverse merchants of Genoa to come to England or [Middelburg, and amongst its cargo Geoffrey Spynel] charged 74 tuns of wine and 130 pieces of iron which belonged to the petition, and by a storm [the ship was forced to Plymouth where all customs] were paid, and then the ship was arrested by the lieutenant of the admiral, [and has made to discharge part of the cargo surmising it to be of the enemy]. They request that their cargo or wine and iron be delivered to them or their attorneys [where they will without] paying further customs, they finding sufficient pledges to answer for the same to [anyone about them being their goods].
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Genoa, [Italy]
London
Gowce (Goes), [Netherlands]
Zeeland, [Netherlands]
La Rochelle, [Poitou, France].
People mentioned
John Pieresson.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1389 as a licence granted to the petitioners concerning the subsequent shipping of the petitioner's goods with those of other Genoese merchants in a ship of Plymouth to Southampton is clearly nearly contemporary (CPR 1388-92, p.82).
