Description
Petitioners
Mayor and citizens of Kingston upon Hull.
Addressees
[Lost].
Nature of request
[Petition in at least three parts, though the petition is badly damaged with all of the upper part and much of the right-hand side of the petition being missing. The full sense is not entirely clear].1) [Too little remains to ascertain the sense].2) The mayor and citizens request that it is granted to them by point of charter that they be discharged and acquitted of every manner of prise for wine ... compensation for the prise on each tun ....3) They further request that it is granted to them by point of charter that they can come to the port of Hull with their wine, and not be disturbed by the gaugers, and that the mayor and citizens make a gauger to fulfil the office of gauge.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
[Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire].
Note
The petition is dated to? 1381 in accordance with the guard note that appears to be based on the charter roll inspeximus and confirmation (CChR 1341-1417, p. 277). However, this makes no mention of the things mentioned in this petition, and there has to be some reservation over the dating of the hand!
