Description
Petitioners
People of Dunwich.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[Petition in six parts].1) The people show that the people of Zeeland came by the coast of the sea and robbed their ships and their goods and returned to Zeeland.2) They show that, for their service, King Henry III, the king's father, pardoned them all the debts that they owed him, and he sent his writ to the barons of the Exchequer to make allowance, but it has still not been allowed. They request that the king will order that they allow this.3) They state that the sea wastes and destroys their town from year to year so that the people are now aggrieved by renewing their port and that how it is to be renewed each third year or else the town will perish.4) They show that the Templars and the Hospitallers and the prior of Eye have impleaded the people of the town [against their] privileges wrongfully and aggrieved them in many ways by which many of the town have given the Templars [...] and made to put the cross on their houses to bar the king and his bailiff [...].5) They show that the keepers of the town who have been before Sir Robert de Ufford have taken the issues of the town and have not rendered it at the Exchequer so that the petitioners are charged for their times in 300 marks and more.6) They show that Austin Fitz John, their burgess went to the court concerning a plea of trespass that the sheriff of Suffolk had against him, and the sheriff procured his imprisonment [possibly presentment] because he was appealed by an appealer whom the sheriff had in his custody at Norwich. Because he is a loyal man of good fame, the people request the king's grace that he be delivered by mainprise or by bail so that he can stand to right at the command of the king.1)
