[This petition is badly damaged, especially towards the bottom] The Abbot and convent of Arbroath make at least five petitions:1) They state that Alexander, late King of Scots, gave and granted a certain sum to their house in perpetual alms, in honour of St Thomas [of Canterbury], to provide lights before [the altar of] St Thomas and to feed thirteen poor men every Tuesday, and they have been seised of this for forty years and more, throughout the reigns of Alexander, and of John Balliol, but that the sheriffs of Forfarshire and Fife are now withholding it from them. They request grace and a remedy.2) They state that they have taken from the Bishop of St Andrews . . . for 20 years in this form, that if they could have . . . without destruction . . .3) They state that they had common pasture in a wood . . . with which the aforesaid Walter enfeoffed them by his charter . . . paying annually to him . . . was between King John Balliol . . . in his hand in prejudice . . .4) Furthermore . . . had a tenant Adam . . . 15 s. annually . . . King Alexander . . . that rent . . . grace . . .5) [Illegible: others may be missing.
