Nature of request
[This petition is fragmentary and badly faded] . . . Alice who was the wife of Thomas de Appelby that whereas Richard de Eskelby, her brother, died seised in his demesne . . . of land with appurtenances in Exelby near Leeming, after whose death the same tenements . . . descended [to her] as heir of the said Richard, of which she was seised until the aforesaid Thomas her husband to whom she in his lifetime [could not act] against . . . alienated to John de Hellebeck, and he to John de Thornton, chaplain, and to Alexander de Ogburn . . . Thornton and Alexander alienated whose tenements to John de Harcla, and John further to Andrew de Harcla, by whose forfeiture the same . . . came into the hand of our lord the king and are still in his hand. May it please our lord the king and his council for God . . . Alice never afterwards demised herself of her right, to any of the said persons or to anyone else, to order that law and reason might be done.
