Description
Petitioners
James de Echingham (Etchingham).
Name(s)
de Echingham (Etchingham), James
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and largely illegible] James de Echingham states that, by virtue of an inquisition held by William Trusel, then Escheator this side of the Trent, at the suit of Geoffrey de Knelle and Isabel Anger, deceased, it was found that 650 acres of land, belonging to Geoffrey and others, were destroyed by floods from the sea, descending in a freshwater channel which runs between the lands of Geoffrey and Isabel in a place called Knelleflote, on the borders of Kent and Sussex, and that the lands could not be saved except by building a sluice and a wall. The king therefore gave permission to Geoffrey and Isabel, and to all others to whose advantage this would be, to build this wall, provided that the course of the channel was not altered. It has now been built across the channel, to James's great harm, as he and his ancestors used to have carriage by boat from his manors in Kent and Sussex to his manor of Etchingham, and now cannot; and to the destruction of the market in his vill of Salehurst, which is situated on the channel, and to the impoverishment of his tenants and the whole surrounding country, and to the king's prejudice should he have the wardship of James's lands. He states that he was never warned of this inquisition, and asks that the letters patent to Geoffrey and Isabel might be repealed, and that the channel might have its former course: as it would be sufficient protection against floods if the old walls along its banks were repaired.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent into Chancery, and good people are to be assigned there to inquire into the points contained in the petition, and the inquisition is to be returned and the other party called, and any others who are [to be called]; and when the arguments of the one party and the other have been heard, justice is further to be done.
