Nature of request
[This petition is damaged, and the entire left-hand side is missing.] [The Mayor and] bailiffs of Bristol state that the king has granted by his letters [patent, for a term of six years, an aid to repair] the walls and quay of Bristol, to be taken from ships [bearing goods for sale, although such an aid has never been taken in the past.] At the suggestion of [Philip de Whitton, the king has granted him] the quayage of Bristol, with the profits arising from it, on the assumption that this is [a perpetual office], whereas it is not. The Mayor and [bailiffs ask that this grant might be repealed and annulled].
