Nature of request
The Bishop of Bangor states that he holds certain lands of the king as part of his temporalities, doing the services for them, and that the king and all his progenitors since the conquest of Wales have always had the wardship and profits [of these lands in times of vacancy]. But lately, in the king's third year, he was summoned to an eyre at Denbigh by the justices of the Countess of . . . to do homage and other services to her for these lands. He claimed his franchises, but these franchises were seized into the hands of the countess. He petitioned the last parliament for a remedy, and it was agreed that orders were to be given to the countess, on pain of everything she could forfeit, to tell her ministers to cease from this process and molestation, between then and the quindene of Trinity last and to appear before the king and council then to do and receive what would be adjudged in this matter. Three writs were sent to her, but she refused to appear, and continued her distraints, imprisonments, ransoms and other molestations against the bishop's tenants, so that they are now abandoning the lordship. He has spent a large amount of money on this suit, and can sue no further, and requests a remedy that will uphold the right of the king and of Holy Church.
