Name(s)
de Monmouth, John

Bishop of Llandaff
Nature of request
[The face of this petition is almost entirely illegible: it can be identified from the endorsement, and the following summary is taken from Rot. Parl. vol. I p.317b (no.124) .] John, Bishop of Llandaff states that the king's father gave his bishopric, to relieve its poverty, all the tithes of assarts in the Forest of Dean that are not within the bounds of any other parish. But because it is often in doubt which part of the forest is within the bounds of a parish and which not, the rectors of the neighbouring churches receive these tithes, unjustly as he believes, so that his church receives little benefit from this grant. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Ralph de Monte Hermerii, the Keeper of the Forest, the Escheator beyond the Trent and Richard de Rodene, or two of them so that the Keeper is one, are to be assigned to inquire, in the presence of the rectors of the neighbouring churches, to be warned of this etc., which assarts in the Forest of Dean are outwith the limits of any parish; and, when the inquisition has been held, they are to inform the king of this in Chancery.
