Description
Petitioners
Archbishop's tenants of the manor of Northfleet.
Addressees
[Not specified]
Nature of request
The archbishop's tenants of the manor of Northfleet state that foreign suits pertaining to them should be put towards the maintenance of the bridge at Rochester, and that, at the time of the war between King John and Simon de Montfort, Imbert de Muntferont constructed a barbican and a raised bridge there, to protect the city and the king's castle, although there was never a barbican or a raised bridge before. In the present year, the whole bridge has been destroyed by a storm, and at the king's command it is being rebuilt; and the sheriff is distraining them to build and maintain this raised bridge: although they ought not to do this. They ask that this might be inquired into by the king's justices, namely by S. de Rofa and by H. de Apeldrefeld.
Nature of endorsement

Places mentioned
Northfleet, [Kent]
Rochester, [Kent].
People mentioned
Archbishop [of Canterbury]
Imbert de Muntferont
John, King of England
Simon de Montefort (Montfort)

Note
Tentatively dated to c. 1277, with reference to CIM 1219-1307 no.1061, an inquisition into Rochester bridge and its repairs, but this does not mention the barbican and lifting bridge mentioned here, and does not seem directly relevant. The hand and the names of the justices, however, would seem to suggest a date of c. 1275-1290.
