Description
Petitioners
Stephen de Cornhille.
Name(s)
de Cornhille, Stephen
Addressees
God, Jesus Christ and the King.
Nature of request
Stephen de Cornhille complains of Henry le Waleys, Stephen Assewy, William le Mazerener, Walter le Blunt, John de Bakewelle, Richard Lanymasse and William de Londe, and of 'Oyl, oyl, oyl' and of 'Nay, nay nay', who were procured by Henry, Stephen and John. He states that they have caused him great harm and shame, contrary to God and reason, and contrary to the privileges granted to him by King Henry and to the law and usages of the city of London. He asks that the king might adjourn him at his pleasure, and pledges everything he has in England, his lands and tenements, and his body to perpetual prison, that he will pursue this matter. If this does not suffice, he can find fifty or sixty earls, barons and knights in the king's host who will stand as his pledges, and he can also find bishops, abbots and priors. He requests the king's grace and mercy, and also a letter of protection so that he can safely trade and go about his business in the city until this business is determined, as his enemies have threatened him and his people. And he puts himself on the king's discretion.
Nature of endorsement
Ave Maria, Ihesus Christus (?).

Note
From the mention of King Henry, the king's father, this petition comes from the reign of Edward I, and from the hand and the unconventional form, it seems likely to come from earlier rather than later in the reign. Henry le Waleys was Mayor of London in 1273-1274, 1281-1284, and 1298-1299, William le Mazerener was sheriff in 1278-1279 and 1281-1282, and Walter le Blunt was sheriff in 1282-1283 and 1285-1286. A note on the guard states that Stephen Asshewy was an alderman in 4 Edward I and 29 Edward I, and that William le Mazerener was an alderman in 25 Edward I and 30 Edward I, and coroner in 14 Edward I.
