[This petition is damaged and badly faded] . . . before the justices of the Bench . . . the said Alan . . . with appurtenances in Upsall and before the same justices . . . on the country by the nisi prius before . . . after the feast of St James the apostle in the year of the reign of our [lord the king] . . . there came a William de Maunby . . . the said Richard . . . take it/her of the . . . Richard demanded of him . . . William de Herle, whereas he was never . . . notwithstanding that the said . . . did not show any warrant . . . the inquest was returned . . . the judgment . . . Agnes (?) de Maunby . . . and delivered . . . the justices of the Bench . . . the said Alan challenged the said writ and the said justices . . . disinheritance, because of which he asks our lord the king and his council . . . warrant under the targe to William de Herle and his companions . . . if they find by inquest that the said . . . the law will allow it . . . this example . . . to the said Alan . . . recovery.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent before the king by writ, and another writ, containing the effect of the petition, is to be sent to the justices of the Bench to have the record and process brought before the king, and there, when the said petition and record and process have been examined, and those who are to be called have been called and their arguments heard, justice it to be done. And Peter de Ludyngton, chief clerk of the Common Bench, in whose hand the false writ allegedly remains, is also to be ordered to have the same writ sent with the record before the king; and likewise Geoffrey le Scrop and his companions, justices etc. are to be ordered to receive the said writ and record, and when they have heard the said Alan's complaint, to do justice.
