[This petition is fragmentary] . . . said lord the . . . haste that he can . . . assignment for his wages . . . hostages (?) by him in this matter . . . the said petitioner . . . ship called Holy Ghost of Newcastle upon Tyne, [of which] one Robert Gabeford is [master] . . . for one year in which ship were thirty men-at-arms, forty archers, [and forty] mariners, of [which] mariners twenty were well [armed] . . . men-at-arms and archers were taken on the first day of last May by the said Richard and others in his company, of which wages and reward . . . ready to hand, and of the remainder sufficient security for the same time, and it is the case that the said people . . . not . . . thirty . . . because by the grace of God the said people with another ship took seven ships outside Sluys and . . . them . . . May it please the said honoured lords to grant a warrant of the privy seal addressed to the War Treasurers to make payment or sufficient assignment . . . petitioner for his said wages and reward for the said men-at-arms, archers and mariners for the aforesaid thirty days, during which time they were thus in the . . . of the king, as is said above, the which customary wages and reward for the said thirty men-at-arms, forty archers, and forty mariners for the same thirty days . . . amount to £116 15d.
