Description
Petitioners
Philip ?de Mowbray.
Name(s)
de Mowbray, Philip
Addressees
King [or king and council].
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged] Philip makes three petitions:1) To our lord the king . . . father of the present king, concerning his crossing to the war in Gascony . . . £50, which were . . . to the same Philip . . . gain (lucre) from the account of John de Sandale, then clerk assigned for the expenses . . . the said John charges himself with the receipt of the said £50, and the letter of Henry de Lacy, [formerly] Earl of Lincoln, which he has, by means of which the allowance is [made] to him, that he might be pleased to order the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to allow him the aforesaid £50, which are still demanded of him in the Exchequer by reason of the said loan.2) He requests an allowance in the debts he owes the king for the money owed to him by the king for the arrears of his wages in the war in Gascony, for which he has the Earl's letters.3) He states that the king's father pardoned all those who were with him in the war in Gascony the twelfth that was granted to the king . . . and that is now demanded of him, and asks that the Treasurer [and Barons of the Exchequer] might be ordered to acquit him of this demand, as it is well known that he was in that war.
Nature of endorsement
[To] the first petition: the Treasurer [and Barons of the Exchequer] are to be ordered that if from the account of John de Sandale . . . can establish that £50 . . . allowed to the said Philip, then they are to have . . . [To the second petition]: . . . account for this . . . further . . .[To the third petition]: He is to have a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer . . . command of the late king concerning this . . . if they find that this is the case and they can establish . . . Philip was in the king's war . . . do what seems to them to be done, according to the form of the pardon.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
Edward [II], King of England
John de Sandale (Sandal)
Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln.
Note
From the hand and the mention of the war in Gascony and of the king's father, and of Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, who died in 1311, this petition would seem to date from the reign of Edward II's reign, and, in its concern with the war of 1294-8, probably from the early years of that reign.
