Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged] The Abbot of St Mary's, York requests a grant of pavage in his borough of Bootham for five years to repair the borough, and lists certain sums that he requests from each horse and cart passing through Bootham, as the borough is so defiled by horses and carts coming to York, that people on horseback or on foot can scarcely pass that way towards the city.

Bootham, [York].
Note
CCR 1296-1302 p.218 is dated 20 August 1298, and may be related to this petition. It would certainly suggest that the roadway at Bootham was in a poor state at this time.
