Nature of request
[This document is largely illegible] The Abbot of Newenham makes three requests;1) He asks that he and his convent might be taken into the king's special protection.2) He states that King John gave him the town of Axminster, and granted him a fair there at the feast of John de Baptist to last for eight days, of which they have always been seised until now [when this is being challenged]. He asks that the fair might be confirmed, as has been done in the past.3) He states that he has always had his bailiff in the hundred of Axminster, but that his role has been challenged by the justices in eyre. He asks, of the king's grace, that the bailiff might act as he has always been accustomed to.
