[This petition is fragmentary] . . . humbly James Clifford that whereas a John Wotton and six people with him of his . . . county of Gloucester for arrears of rent, and carried off the said animals with them, there came . . . by the high road between Colesbourne and Elkstone in the same county . . . James as a work of charity to ride after the said John Wotton and his . . . which James having great compassion for the said woman, for the great grief and misfortune . . . seeing that someone came riding after them, bent their bows and . . . people say, the which John Wotton, seeing that he had done wrong, . . . that is to say William Wotton and Thomas Wotton, and took them . . . James demanded of the said William Wotton and Thomas Wotton . . . one Thomas Brugge of Undrehull, steward of Chichester Abbey . . . will answer to all points. And after that time, that is to say the Wednesday . . . [justices] of the peace assigned in the same county were sitting in their [sessions] . . . of the said John Wotton, and also the said John Wotton and John Bru . . . faction and adherence, arrayed in manner of war of which . . .
