Petitioners
Mayor, hundred peers, jurats and community of Bayonne.
Nature of request
[This petition is fragmentary] The Mayor, jurats and community of Bayonne complain that . . . de Sengosse, clerk of Bayonne, killed a certain citizen of Bayonne with a sword, and that Peter Andrew de Lansuc, clerk of Bayonne entered a certain citizen's house by night and . . ., and of other attacks by clerks. They state that the bishop of Bayonne is protecting these clerks, so that they do not receive justice or compensation. Thye quote letters, dated 18 January in the king's eighth year, apparently authorising the Seneschal and Constable to do justice.[They ask] . . . to grant that concerning the lands and other possessions that the citizens of the same community cultivate . . . dioceses of Bayonne and Dax, they might not be obliged to answer or to obey the law, except before the Mayor of Bayonne, grant to them by royal authority that concerning the arbitration made against you as . . . Bath and Wells between the said Bishop of Bayonne on the one hand and the said Mayor and hundred peers . . . although they have no power over this, since they can no longer conveniently . . . procedure on the arbitration might be deferred until your coming to Gascony.
