Nature of request
The burgesses of Denbigh make a series of requests:1) They ask that the town of Denbigh, and half a league around the said town might be a free borough, and its inhabitants free burgesses, and have the right to imprison their fellow-burgesses, for felonies, trespasses, or other crimes committed both within the Welshry and within the Englishry.2) They ask that no Welsh minister should intermeddle with anything done within the town.3) They ask that they might have a merchant guild, with a hanse and other appurtenances, so that no-one who is not of the guild may trade in the town except at the will of the burgesses.4) If any burgess dies [with or without] making a will, they ask that the king or his ministers might not seize their goods for that reason, but that their heirs and executors might have disposal of their goods according.5) They ask that the burgesses, their heirs or successors might not be accused, convicted or forbarred by any outsider of any appeals, misprisons, trespasses, crimes, challenges or demands, on the basis of any accusation made within the lordship, but only by their fellow-burgesses.6) They ask that they might not be accused in the Welsh court or the English, except for something that touches the community of the town: and in that case that the matter might be dealt with according to the liberties approved of old and reasonably used in the boroughs of Rhuddlan and Conway.7) They ask that if it is a matter to be dealt with outside the lordship, within the principality of Wales, the burgesses might not be convicted or forbarred except by burgesses of English boroughs in the region where the case will take place.8) They ask that they, their goods and chattels, wherever they are found in the king's [lordship], might not be arrested for any debt to which they are not pledges or principal debtors; and that they might not lose, for trespass or forfeiture of their servants, their goods or chattels in the possession of these servants, or in any place in the keeping of these servants, if they can prove that the goods are theirs.
