Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged] The petition states that [the king owes] various merchants of Gascony a large sum of money [for wines taken for him] by his butler, and that in payment they were given a certain amount from the custom . . . of Newcastle upon Tyne, Kingston upon Hull, Boston . . . Sandwich and Southampton, but that the custom was reduced by the Ordinances, [so that they could not be paid] and are greatly harmed, and have nothing with which to trade. They ask the king to give them a good assignment for their payment.

[The Treasurer and Barons] of the Exchequer [are to be ordered] that, for what can legitimately [be found to be due] to them . . . within . . . as quickly as possible.
