Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged] Gerard de Lane makes four requests:1) He petitions concerning the Vicomte d'Orthe, who has killed more than 50 men, women and children, and driven others out of their homes and possessions. He has then appealed to the King of France. He asks that the judgment on this man by his peers might be put into execution.2) He accuses the Vicomte, with Peter Arnold his brother and John de Spremunt, castellan of Aspremont, of the murder of Bertrand de Lane and Bernard his brother, and Peter de Lane his uncle, and nine of the king's men, in the Vicomte's castle of Aspremont, asks the king, in consideration of this horrible deed, to ask the King of France to arrest the Vicomte and the others, and to order the Seneschal of Gascony to seize the bodies and goods of anyone helping them; and that justice might be done.3) He asks that the £100 of Bordeaux that the king granted to Bertrand from the prevote of the Ile d'Oleron might be granted . . . for term of life.4) He asks that [he] might be granted a benefice in England or in Gascony, in consideration of his service in Scotland.
