Date

Description
Petitioners
William Robynson (Robinson) of Dartmouth.
Name(s)
Robynson (Robinson), William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Robynson requests power and authority to attach and arrest Arnold and all his goods and cause him to come before the King and council to answer for his actions. Robynson was ordered by Eliot to attach Arnold or his goods at Dartmouth at the end of November in the 16th year [1476], because previously Arnold had unloaded and sold 29 tuns of Gascon wine at Topsham without paying any custom. Robynson took 4 tuns of Arnold's wine (which Ismay delivered into the Exchequer where they were valued at 46s 8d each), but Arnold escaped before he could come before Eliot to answer. Arnold has now caused four of Robynson's ships to be arrested at Bordeaux and brought him before the judges of Bordeaux where he was fined for arresting Arnold's wine.
Nature of endorsement
Writ of attachment to answer on the quinzaine of Easter next.
Places mentioned
Dartmouth, [Devon]
Bordeaux, [Gascony, France]
Topsham, [Devon]
Brittany, [France]
Southampton, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
William Arnold of Bordeaux, merchant
Thomas Elyot (Eliot), customer of Dartmouth and Topsham
John Ismay, searcher of Dartmouth.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1477 since it refers to events of November 16 Edward IV and, in the endorsement, to Easter next.
