Name(s)
Mareschall (Marshal), John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
servant of Roger de Ledes
Nature of request
John Mareschall states that he was indicted on the accusation that, in the twenty-second year of Richard II, on the Wednesday before the feast of St Margaret the virgin, in the royal highway at Leeds, at a place called Sheepscar Bridge, he and others lay in wait, armed, for John son of Robert Passelewe of Newton, apprentice in law, who had been in the Duke of Lancaster's company at Rothwell, and there murdered him. He requests a pardon for this felony, murder and ambush.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] This bill was granted by the king at Windsor on 28 December and handed to the Chancellor to put into execution.[None on dorse]

John [Passelewe], son of Robert Passelewe of Newton
Robert Passelewe of Newton, apprentice in law
[John of Gaunt], Duke of Lancaster.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1398 by the mention of the feast of St Margaret, 22 Richard II (20 July 1398) and by a grant made on 15 January 1399 of the money paid by several people on behalf of Roger de Ledes that he would keep the peace towards William Passelewe, which mentions the killing of John (CPR 1396-9, p.465). It might date to 1398, but the specific mention of the reign of Richard II suggests that it is more likely to date from the reign of Henry IV.
