Description
Petitioners
William Bercher of Kingthorpe.
Name(s)
Bercher, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
William Bercher of Kingthorpe states that in the time of the king's father, William Campyon, Henry de le Stabyll, Adam Skayff, Andrew Langbaron, William Fordon, William de Dale, John Colynson, John de Bolton, John Futynghale, and Lawrence Nitynghale, on the orders of Edmund Hastynges and William Hastynges, attacked him at Kingthorpe, putting out his eyes and cutting off a large part of his tongue. And when they later learned that he could still speak, they lay in wait for him disguised as women, in order to kill him; and their threats were such that for a long time he did not dare to complain to the king, and barely dares to complain now. He asks, in consideration of these horrible deeds, and because he is too poor to sue at common law against the malefactors, who are very powerful and have many allies in the area where the deeds were done, that the Chancellor might be instructed to order them by writ, on pain of a heavy penalty, to appear before the king to answer for their actions and to other accusations the petitioner wishes to make, and to do and receive what the king wishes to order.
Nature of endorsement
Various writs are to be issued under the great seal to William Campion and to his nine accomplices mentioned here, to appear before the king in Chancery on a certain day and on pain of a certain penalty, to be decided by the Chancellor, to answer to the matter of this petition. And the Sheriff of Yorkshire is also to be ordered by the king's writ to deliver the king's writ, addressed to him on this matter, to each of the aforesaid persons.
Places mentioned
