Nature of request
Furtyne Vanes states that he loaded his barge with various types of merchandise at Bermeo in Vizcaya, to take to Southampton or Sluis, but that seven balengers from Rye and Winchelsea attacked his barge at sea on 12 May last, between Guernsey and the Isle of Wight, killed two of the crew and wounded the other five, and took the barge to Rye or Winchelsea. He requests a remedy, so that he might have restitution of his barge and merchandise, and also requests a warrant that he might travel safely in the realm without arrest or hindrance.

CCR 1402-5 p.356 is dated 1 July 1404, and would seem to be either in response to the petition or to a later one (it mentions earlier orders that were not obeyed): but as both the petition and CCR 1402-5 p.356 mention the assault taking place on '12 May last', it cannot be much later.
