Description
Petitioners
Margaret Boseword (Bosworth), widow of John Boseworth, draper of Northampton.
Name(s)
Boseword (Bosworth), Margaret
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Margaret Boseword, widow of John Boseworth, draper of Northampton, states that since her husband's death she has been continuously harassed by William Tresham, who wishes to disinherit her of her livelihood and rents in Northampton, and that by his great power he has made her tenants become his tenants. She requests letters to William, ordering him to allow her to enjoy her livelihood in peace, according to the law, on pain of a penalty to be ordained by the king.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Given at Kennington on 4 May.Answered on Monday.W. P. Le Bardolf, Chamberlain [sign manual].[On dorse] It seems, if it please the king, that a letter should hereupon be directed to the Chancellor, to call before him by a writ sub poena the party complained against, and to determine thereupon as right and conscience will.
Places mentioned
Northampton, [Northamptonshire]
Kennington, [Surrey].
People mentioned
John Boseworth (Bosworth), draper of Northampton
William Tresham
[William Phelip, Lord] Bardolf, Chamberlain of England.
Note
Datable to 1437-1441 by the name of 'W. P. Lord Bardolf, Chamberlain': William Phelip died in 1441, and seems to have been referred to as Lord Bardolf after November 1437 (Complete Peerage, vol. I, pp.420-421). Assuming that the Monday when the petition was apparently answered was 4 May, this dates the petition to 1439.A unrelated pardon is granted to the petitioner on 23 October 1437 (CPR 1436-41 p.102).
