Description
Petitioners
Walter de Stratton.
Name(s)
de Stratton, Walter
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Walter de Stratton states that his uncle, Adam de Stratton, whose heir he is, was seised of the manor of Sevenhampton, with the hamlets of Highworth, Stratton St Margaret, and Cricklade, in the hundred of Highworth, in his demesne as of fee and right, in the time of the king's grandfather, by the gift of Isabel, Countess of Aumale, and that these were taken into the hand of the king's gradfather, because of certain accusations made against Adam, and not because of forfeiture; and the king afterwards pardoned Adam for 500 marks, which he paid in the nineteenth year of the king's grandfather. These manors, hamlets and hundred then came into the hand of Isabella, formerly Queen of England. Walter, as kinsman and heir of Adam, requests a remedy, and that his right might be tried. There follow a copy of a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, instructing them to release Adam de Stratton from prison; and a memorandum that the fine of 500 marks has been paid.
Nature of endorsement
The petition is to be sent to Chancery, and the Treasurer and Chamberlains are further to be ordered to provide information as to the cause in Chancery, and when the arguments have been heard there, the king is to be advised on this.
