[This petition is badly damaged and faded] [To our] Lord the king and his council, his chaplains, the Abbot and convent of St Mary's, York, pray that whereas all their temporalities together . . . the manor of Whitgift and the moor of Inclesmoor, with their appurtenances, in the county of York, at £600 in great . . . and although the aforesaid Abbot and convent, or their predecessors, in the said manor and moor with their appurtenances, from time . . . Lascy, formerly Earl of Lincoln, after that assessment was made . . . came, they never had anything, nevertheless the said Abbot and [convent] . . . pounds, according to the said assessment of £600, for every tenth and other tax granted to our said lord the king . . . by the clergy of his realm and imposed on the same clergy, have been charged. May it please our said lord the king . . . the aforesaid Abbot and convent and their successors of such tenths and taxes touching the said manor and moor . . . together with any sums of money which are demanded [from them] by summons of the Exchequer for the arrears of such . . . reason of the said manor and moor as is said above.

Note
Tentatively dated on the guard to c. 1327, with reference to CCR 1327-30 p.54 (dated 5 March 1327), an order to allow the Abbot of St Mary's to pay £600 in instalments of £100 annually: but this is the remainder of his account for the time when he and his predecessors were collectors of the tenths of the clergy, and in consideration of damage to his abbey by the Scots, none of which seems relevant to this petition. Tentatively dated on the basis of the hand and the language.
