Nature of request
John, son of Osbern Giffard, states that his father held the manor of Winterborne Houghton in Dorset, with the advowson of the church of the same manor, which he alienated to Hugh le Despenser the father, to John's disinheritance. Hugh further had John seized, imprisoned, and treated so badly that he did not dare to enter the manor during Osbern's life, or to sue against Hugh after his death. The manor is now in the king's hand through Hugh's forfeiture. John requests justice.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show the fine in Chancery, and when it has been seen, certain people are to be appointed there to inquire, in the presence of the keeper, into the things contained in the petition and all other necessary articles etc. And the muniments that belonged to Hugh are to be searched to see if anything can be found for the king that might bar John. And the inquisition etc. and certification are to be returned in Chancery, and the king is further to be advised.
