SC 8/295/14717
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John Palet.
Name(s)
Palet, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Palet states that the foreign tenants of Abergavenny, who are Welsh, have often risen up in war, and that the denizen tenants have loyally aided their lords against their felonies, but that the foreign tenants have pursued them in the foreign court of Abergavenny, contrary to the charter which was granted to them by Lord de Hastings, and have utterly destroyed them. Since Lord de Hastings's death, Hugh le Despenser had the keeping of the lordship, and with his abetment, one of the foreigners sued John in the foreign court, and when he refused to appear, as this was contrary to the charter, Hugh's bailiffs in the foreign court outlawed him, and wrongly took his lands and tenements for Hugh's use. He requests a remedy, and that the charter might be allowed to him, according to the intention of Lord de Hastings.
Nature of endorsement
The Steward of Abergavenny is to be ordered by writ of Chancery, containing his grievances, to rehearse before him the process which took place in the foreign court of Abergavenny concerning the aforesaid grievances; and, when the charter has been examined, he is to have it allowed to him according to what reason demands, and he is further to do due and swift justice to the aforesaid John.
Places mentioned
Abergavenny, [Monmouthshire], Wales.
People mentioned
[John de Hastings], Lord de Hastings
Hugh le Despenser.
Note
Datable with reference to the death of John de Hastings in 1324-1325, when Hugh le Despenser obtained custody of the lordship and the heir: from the complaint against him, the petition would seem to date from after his fall.
