Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/295/14701
Date
[1415-1422]
Description
Petitioners
Sisters of the hospital of St James near Canterbury (Thanington).
Addressees
Duke of Bedford, Guardian of England, and council.
Nature of request
The sisters of the hospital of St James near Canterbury state that King Henry [II], their founder, gave them certain lands and tenements, in pure and perpetual alms, and that they have always been quit of all tenths, fifteenths and subsidies, and the collectors of these tenths, fifteenths and subsidies given an allowance for this. They request a writ under the great seal to the collectors of the tenths and fifteenths previously granted in Kent, to acquit them until the coming of the king of England, as they are in any case worth only 4 marks.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be issued to the collectors of the fifteenth and tenth as is requested, and in the copy of the writ . . . annexed, granted . . . January in the ninth (?) year.
Places mentioned
Canterbury, Kent
[Thanington, Kent].
People mentioned
[John of Lancaster], Duke of Bedford, Guardian of England
Henry [II], King of England
[Henry V], King of England.
Note
The mention of the return of the king to England must date this petition to the reign of Henry V, and the dating clause seems to date it to the January of either the king's second year (1415, when he was in England) or possibly his ninth year (1422, when he was in France) Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, was officially regent at this time, but John, Duke of Bedford, had presided over the parliament of December 1421: so January 1422 seems the most likely date for this petition.
