- Nature of request
- The merchants and citizens of London and Norwich state that the ancient assizes for certain kinds of cloth are not longer being upheld, with the result that they are being punished overseas by prison and redemption for the defective cloth they have bought here. They ask that an ordinance might be made that the assize might be upheld by assay, alnage and alnager, and that, when this ordinance has been publicly proclaimed, all cloth found to be defective might be forfeit to the king.
- Nature of endorsement
- Certain people are to be appointed to inquire if the assize was in the past as is claimed by the petition, and how the assize has been kept in the past, and by whom, and in what way, and into all other necessary articles. And when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, a remedy is to be ordained. And the [cloth]workers are to be warned of the holding of the inquisition.
