- Brother Roger, Prior of Michelham, states that Prior Roger, the prior third before him, purchased from John de la Haye, father of the present John, 50 acres of land with appurtenances in Arlington, for himself and his . . . and successors, which lands fell to John de la Haye as escheats. And it has now been presented before the justices in eyre in Sussex that John de la Haye held this land of the king in chief, so that the justices have taken it into the king's hand and expelled the prior. He requests grace and a remedy.

Note (Additional information about the record)
- Instructions to take into the king's hand the lands of John de la Haye, deceased, including Arlington, dated 19 July 1274, are found on CFR 1272-1307 p.25; and the next eyre in Sussex was in 1279. This coincides with a brother Roger, who was Prior of Michelham between 1277 and 1288.
