Nature of request
To our lord the king and to his council, your poor nuns, the Abbess and convent of Wherwell, pray . . . by the possessions of Alfred son of Edgar, Earl of Devon, in the year of the Incarnation of our Lord 959 (?) . . . your progenitors increased and accomplished to the honour of God and of the . . . of which abbey the course of the said . . . abbey which is called Harewood, in times of you progenitors and in your time by . . . perambulation at that time disafforested . . . and remained out of danger of the foresters. May it please your most noble dread lordship to command . . . special . . . aforesaid should not be put in danger of forest, as a work of charity and for the souls of your father . . . the wood was of the ancient demesnes of our lord the king. And may it please your most excellent lordship to consider . . . of their said church, from the time of their foundation until now, freely out of danger of forest . . . justices of the forest by inquest of office poorly informed and not . . . was that the said wood was at any time of the king's demesne or of . . . such colour . . . now again disturbed in their . . . and their profit . . . of their church . . . always, and concerning which they ask that they might have justice and a remedy . . . to live, nor the estate of their house . . .
Nature of endorsement
Good people are to be assigned to inquire into the points contained in this petition, in the presence of the keeper of the said forest or his lieutenant . . . and when the inquisition has been held and returned in Chancery, the Chancellor, calling to him the justices and other wise men of the king's council, and the king's sergeants, and hearing the arguments for the king and for the party, is to give them a suitable remedy.
