Description
Petitioners
People of Kesteven and Holland in the county of Lincoln.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Kesteven and Holland in the county of Lincoln state that the Prior of Sempringham has been assigned to collect various tolls and customs on carts and horses passing with merchandise through the hamlet of St Saviour, which is at the end of the bridge leading from Holland to Kesteven, to maintain the road and bridges. But the prior has not spent any of the large sum of money he has received from these tolls, but he has torn down several off the bridges and carried off their wood, so that people passing that way have to use boats, to their great harm and cost. They ask that good and sufficient auditors might be appointed to audit the prior's account for the whole time that he has been collector and receiver of these tolls and customs, and that what it is found that the prior owes from this account might be spent on the repair of the road and bridges.
Nature of endorsement
Certain faithful people are to be appointed to inquire into the contents of the petition, and to audit their account, and to do further what justice urges.
