Description
Petitioners
Richard de la Chaumbre (Chamber), clerk.
Name(s)
Chaumbre (Chamber), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
Richard de la Chaumbre makes two complaints:1) He states that Richard, Earl of Arundel, gave his father a piece of land in the lordship of Oswestry, outside the boundaries of any county, called the land of 'Morgan', and that his father and he were seised of it during the lifetime of the earl, until he was wrongly expelled by Earl Edmund; so that the land is now in the king's hand. He requests a remedy.2) He states that within the last two years the same Edmund forced him against his will to grant the reversion of £40 worth of land, also in Oswestry, outside the boundaries of any county and outwith the common law, after the deaths of Richard and of Cecily his mother. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition: the keeper of the land of Oswestry is to be ordered by writ to inquire into the contents and other necessary articles, and when the inquisition has been returned, the king is to be further informed etc. And the memoranda that belonged to the earl are to be examined, to see what can be found on behalf of the king to exclude the complainant from his demand.
Places mentioned
Oswestry, [Shropshire]
Morgan [unidentified].
People mentioned
Richard [Fitz Alan], Earl of Arundel
Richard de la Chaumbre (Chamber), father of Richard de la Chaumbre

Note
The complaints in CPR 1301-7 pp.544-545 are dated 14 March 1307; but as this petition speaks of Edmund as the earl 'qe dreyn fut' and of his lands as being in the king's hand, it must date from after his death and forfeiture in November 1326, but before the restoration of his son Richard in December 1330.
