Nature of request
William Bretoun of Houghton states that Robert de Shakeleston . . . from William in Houghton for a year to store his corn, and John de Seint . . . and Hugh le Despenser his brother-in-law falsely accused him of withholding the corn, through greed to have his lands and chattels. He was also threatened with life and limb until he bound himself to John in 200 marks, if he did not pay 100 marks by the day contained in the indenture. And because he could not pay more than half, he took 41 acres of land and wood from him, in allowance for 40 marks, although they were worth £100. He was also forced by Hugh's threats to come to Winchester, and to make a recognisance in Chancery for 100 marks, to prevent him or his heirs from claiming their right. He requests a remedy.
