Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/294/14674
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Francis Bacheue (Bachoue).
Name(s)
Bacheue (Bachoue), Francis
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Francis Bacheue states that he took the manors of Witham and Cressing in Essex, formerly belonging to the Templars, from the king's father, for a certain price, by a commission which he quotes, and which is dated at Windsor on 5 May, in the sixth year of the king's father. He then delivered them to the Hospitallers, as he was ordered to do by a writ of the king's father, and an indenture was made between him and the Hospitallers, in which the corn growing on these manors was valued. But when he came to account at the Exchequer for the time when he had these manors, he could not have this valuation, but only a lower one, and he has been sent to the Fleet, where he still is. He asks that he might have allowanced for the valuation contained in the indenture, and he will make full satisfaction to the king for the rest.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ in Chancery to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to inquire into how much the corn mentioned here was worth at the time of the delivery made to the Hospitallers by the aforementioned Francis; and when the inquisition has been returned in the Exchequer, an allowance is to be given to him for the aforesaid corn according to the same inquisition and the discretion of the Barons of the same Exchequer.Enrolled.
Places mentioned
Witham, Essex
Cressing, Essex
Fleet prison, [London].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Order of the Temple (Knights Templars)
Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (Knights Hospitallers).
Note
CFR 1307-19 p.170 is dated 5 May 1313, as the petition states. From the hand and language, and from the fact that this was said to be in the time of the king's father, this petition would seem to date from the early years of the reign of Edward III. There are mentions of the petitioner in CPR 1327-30 p.416 (2 August 1329) and CCR 1327-30 p.523 (14 February 1329).
