Description
Petitioners
John Hothum (Hotham), Bishop of Ely.
Name(s)
Hothum (Hotham), John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Ely
Nature of request
John, Bishop of Ely states that William de Rede held certain tenements of him in the vill of Papworth in Cambridgeshire, and died, leaving an heir under age, and, before he could take possession of the wardship of the lands, the Bishop of Exeter, the Treasurer of England, procured an inquest which claimed that William held lands of the crown: which he did not, except for the manor of Silton in Dorset, of the honour of the Eagle, and the manor of Cainhoe in Bedfordshire, of the honour of Bedford, which were both escheated to the king, not to the crown. The Bishop requests restitution of the wardship, with the issues in the meantime.
Nature of endorsement
The inquest is to be examined in Chancery, and justice is to be done there in this matter: and if it is necessary, there is to be another inquest.
Places mentioned
Papworth, Cambridgeshire
Selton (Silton), Dorset
Eagle honour
Cainhoe, Bedfordshire

Note
Walter Stapeldon, Bishop of Exeter, was Treasurer of England between February 1320 and August 1321, and between May 1322 and July 1325. The petition probably dates from one of these periods, although it might date from after Stapeldon's death in 1326.
