Nature of request
Henry de Harwedon states that William de Wyvelyngham impleaded him before Robert del Isle and his companions, justices of trailbaston in Cambridgeshire, claiming that Henry had imprisoned him, and that he replied that he was Chancellor of Cambridge University, and that in the charters granted by the king to the Chancellor, masters and scholars of Cambridge it was contained that if a clerk committed a trespass in the university, he should be imprisoned until the Chancellor ordered his release, and that William was at that time a scholar in the university and accused of various crimes; and he had committed no other trespass against him. The justices would not allow this, so he sued to the king and had a writ to bring the record and process before the king. But the justices went ahead in the plea despite this, and awarded damages of £100 to William; William has now had the record and process brought before the king, and Henry has been put in exigent. He has purchased [a writ] to correct the errors in the case, which is currently pending. He asks that he might be released from the exigent on mainprise, and that he might sue before the king to correct the errors in the record and process.
