Description
Petitioners
William de Neuport (Newport) of Essex.
Name(s)
de Neuport (Newport), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Neuport states that he served the king's father, and that he and others of his household took into his hand the lands and goods of many people in Essex and Hertfordshire, who were indicted before the king, and made other executions of his commands and will., and that because of this he incurred much hatred and enmity. He has suffered greatly for this: he was thrown out of lands in Cressing after the king was taken, and robbed of his goods there, and he has never recovered a penny. After that he was maliciously indicted and appealed of homicide, but was acquitted by a good jury in the king's Bench before Geoffrey le Scrop and Richard de Wylughby, as they can attest. Since the king's death his crops have been carried off, his house has been broken into violently, and he would have been killed if he had not been at York that day, and he has been captured and threatened with death if he did not make acquittances to them for all actions. He has also been falsely accused of various felonies and tresapasses before justices of trailbaston in Essex. He requests pardon for his suit, and for the felonies, trespasses and outlawries; and if this is not possible, a writ to the justices of trailbaston to have the indictments touching him brought into the king's Bench, and that a remedy might be ordained for him.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is attested before the council that the said William has suffered these oppressions and grievances . . . for hatred of the service of the king's father, he is to have a writ of Chancery to have all the indictments touching the said William which are before the justices of trailbaston brought before the king at the quinzaine of Easter next. And also, if the said William finds security in Chancery to appear before the king at the said quinzaine, to stand to the law with regard to the aforesaid indictments, the sheriffs are to be ordered to stay proceedings in the exigents which they have made against the said William because of the aforesaid indictments by the aforesaid . . .
