Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/294/14660
Date
[? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Buri (Bury) and Elizabeth de Buri (Bury), his wife.
Name(s)
de Buri (Bury), Robert; Buri (Bury); Elizabeth
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Robert de Buri and Elizabeth his wife state that they were assigned lands in Hampshire and Wiltshire as Elizabeth's dower from the tenements of Warin Maudut, her late husband, by assignment of the king, and that they delivered the lands in Wiltshire to Thomas Maudut, Elizabeth's son, who is now dead, as can be seen from the evidence attached to this petition. After the end of these five years he continued to hold the lands until he died, with the permission of Robert and Elizabeth, but with no manner of deed. After his death the king seized these lands into his hand with Thomas's other lands, and delivered them to Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester, so that they could have no remedy. They request a remedy now.
Nature of endorsement
Faithful people are to be assigned in Chancery to inquire, in the presence etc, into the contents of the petition etc. and into other necessary articles etc., and the Treasurer and Chamberlains, or any others in whose keeping the memoranda which were Thomas's are, are to be ordered [to search] whether the complainants made any deed which might be prejudicial to them etc.; and when the inquisition and the certification have been returned in Chancery, justice is to be done there. The deeds were shown before the council.
Places mentioned
Dean, Hampshire
Grateley, Hampshire
Westbury, Wiltshire.
People mentioned
Warin (Warren) (Maudut) (Mauduit), former husband of Elizabeth de Buri
Thomas Maudut (Mauduit), son of Elizabeth de Buri
Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester.
Note
Roughly datable by CFR 1327-37 p.28, which is dated 14 March 1327. The complaint against Despenser, without mention of the king's father, would seem to suggest that this petition was presented to the parliament of January 1327.
