SC 8/294/14654A
Date

Description
Petitioners
Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England (Knights Hospitallers).
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England (Knights Hospitallers)
Nature of request
The Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England states that he has often had writs of the king's father to deliver to them all the muniments concerning the lands of the Templars which were in the keeping of the Treasurer and Chamberlains, in the Tower of London and elsewhere, but that he has not been able to have delivery without William de . . . and . . . de Sibbethorp, who had the chief of the muniments in their possession, and who refused to hand them over. He requests delivery of the muniments.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have a writ of sicut alias in Chancery to the Treasurer and Chamberlains, to deliver the muniments etc. or to explain the reason why etc.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Order of the Temple (Knights Templars)
William de . . .
[Thomas] de Sibbethorp (Sibthorpe)
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
From the mention of the late king, it would seem that this petition dates from the early years of Edward III. From CCR 1330-3 pp.112-113 (a request by the Prior to be discharged from debts from the lands of the Templars, dated 20 January 1331), it would seem that these lands are now in his hands, so the petition is most likely to date from the very early years of the reign; however, CCR 1330-3 p.496 shows that by 9 September 1332 lands in Somerset were still being withheld, so it might be later.
