Reference
SC 8/293/14646
Date
[? 1317-? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Paris of London.
Name(s)
de Paris, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly faded and largely illegible] Robert de Paris of London states that he sued before the sheriffs of London against Geoffrey de Venise, William de Caustone and John Priour, for a debt; and that he has been so delayed in this case that he has nothing on which to live. He requests a remedy for the [late?] king's soul, so that he might hold his goods according to justice and the law of the land.
Nature of endorsement
The Mayor and Sheriffs of London are to be ordered that, notwithstanding any previous command sent to them under the privy seal, they are to inquire into the aforementioned business by upright and law-worthy men of the city of London, by whom . . . do full justice on this.
Places mentioned
London
Lincoln, [Lincolnshire]
St Lawrence Jewry parish, London.
People mentioned
Geoffrey de Venise (Venice)
William de Caustone
John Priour (Prior).
Note
This petition mentions the suit continuing through the ninth and eleventh reigns of King Edward, 'whom God preserve', and also makes its request for the soul of the king: this is hard to make out, but would normally mean the late king. This, and the hand and language, would suggest a date of 1317-1327 for this petition.
